Giethoorn With Loved Ones!

Planning a family trip in Netherlands? Head over to Giethoorn! It’s a small scenic village in Netherlands with plenty of activities for the whole family. Our age groups ranges from 1-year-old to 69-year-old, so it is indeed great for everyone!

However, if you do plan to enjoy all the beautiful sceneries, we would highly suggest you to bring strollers for the the little ones, and wheelchair for the senior citizens who are easily tired / legs problem. It’s because the scenic walking route is quite far for them.

While you’re there, rent a boat trip for the whole family to enjoy! Our boat were quite big to fit everyone, and Kak Fay was really brave to be the captain. Well done!

Just remember these boats don’t have breaks, especially the big ones are hard to stop. So just ignore those people who stares at your big boat that happens to bump everywhere, and enjoy the fun!

Top 5 Things To Do In Brussels & Bruges

Planning for a short trip to Brussels and Bruges? Here are what we would recommend for a 2 days 1 night trip!

1. Frederick Blondeel

We know, many Malaysians would’ve visited Godiva and the likes, but Frederick Blondeel is said to serve one of the best hot chocolates in town!

When we were there, we saw the long queue for the ice cream, so we decided to try the ice cream instead. They were awesome!

Aydeen, however, did not know how to “taste” the ice cream, so he decided to eat the whole ice cream and cried (or should we say scream) when it’s finished. Oh well.

2. La Grande Place

This is a must-visit place in Brussels! La Grande Place is a UNESCO World Heritage Site.

Here, you may find the Town Hall and many souvenir & collectible shops, including Hard Rock cafe & Starbucks (yes, we are Starbucks collectors).

3. Minnewater

Sadly, this is the place that we were not able to visit, due to time constraint. But then again, there are loads of canals in Bruges (including our AirBnB stay) , so we’re not missing much πŸ™‚

What makes Minnewater special is the story behind it. Minnewater is also known as the Lake of Love. The nickname comes from a story of a girl name Minna who died trying to escape from an arranged marriage into the arms of her lover Stromberg. Local legend says that lovers who cross the lake’s bridge will experience eternal love.

We were planning to try our luck on eternal love there. He he. Just kidding. Eternal love is gained by your deeds & efforts, not by visiting places, eh? πŸ™‚

4. The Markt Square

This is the place to be in Bruges! The Markt Square is full of history. The most striking building is without any doubt, the Belfry. If you would like to know about the history of Bruges, you may also visit the Historium!

5. Try the famous Belgian Fries and Mussels!

Belgium is famous for its Belgian fries (they even have a museum for it) and mussels. While you’re there, why not head over to any restaurant or cafes, and try these out? You will definitely love them! πŸ™‚

Hope these recommendations will ease your planning. Have fun on your short Brussels and Bruges trip!

How To Have A Perfect Road Trip In Europe

Renting a car is one of the best options to consider in Europe, especially if you are travelling with a baby or toddler, and to multiple countries.

For one, it is cheaper, if you are travelling in a group, and can share out the expenses.

Secondly, cheap travels such as busses & coaches sometimes require you to bring your own car seat, which is quite a hassle to bring in a 13-hour flight with a 1-year old toddler.

Here are the tips for renting car in Europe, especially for Malaysians!

1. Malaysian Driving License Vs International Driving License

Our Malaysian Driving License are usually accepted. However, it’s best to do a research on the countries you’ll be driving beforehand. For instance, France required an International Driving License issued by JPJ Malaysia.

The International Driving License is also very easy to apply if you already have a Malaysian Driving License. Just go to the nearest JPJ & say that we need an international driving license. There will be a fee paid. You will usually get your international driving license within the same day.

2. Book Your Car & Car Insurance Online Through Car Rental Brokers

For one, it is always save time & money to book your car online. You may find various options, and may even compare the costs between car rental companies. If you rent a car through car rental brokers, the choice is even wider!

Many car rental brokers offer insurance to be bought together with the car rental. It is highly advisable to get the fully-covered insurance, as we will never know what will happen (and how much expenses to be incurred) in rainy days. However, the choice is all yours!

Insurance that is bought online are said to be cheaper than those bought at the car rental company’s counter, so it may save your pennies!

You will need to declare if you plan to drive outside the car rental’s country.

If you plan to pick up and drop off the rented car at different locations, there will be an extra charge called “one way fee”, which differs between companies. This needs even more research and comparisons.

If you pick up or drop off your rented car at airports, there are usually “airport charge”.

However, do take note that there will be a few things that need to be paid locally, such as deposits and infant car seats. Again, the charges differs between companies, so do your research thoroughly!

Also, please do read all the fine prints. Certain companies have “miles restrictions “, while others don’t!

It is required to receive & return the rented car with full tank.

3. Driver’s Credit Card

Drivers, please DO NOT LEAVE YOUR CREDIT CARD AT HOME!

It is key requirement that drivers bring their credit card together for deposits and other things that need to be paid locally.

4. Driving Opposite Side of the Road

Be prepared to drive on the left side of the road in countries such as Netherlands, Belgium & France, while driving on the right sight of the road in the UK! Flexibility is the key to drive in Europe.

5. Online & Offline Maps & Address

In an era of Waze, Google, pocket Wi-Fi and the likes, always expect the unexpected. Signal loss and data problem are real, people!

If it happens to u, and you don’t have an offline map, relax. Stop somewhere nearby and look for any local internet. Or just kill time while waiting for your pocket Wi-Fi to refresh quota. Travel needs to be stress-free!

Hope these tips will help you to plan your European road trip wisely! πŸ™‚

The Emirates Experience – Viewpoint of Family Travellers

So many to write, so little time! As you may have guessed, Shafa is only writing her posts once Aydeen is sleeping or taking a nap. So here’s a quick write up on our Emirates experience!

1. Choosing seat

We are not a believer of paying to book seats pre-baby. After having one, we change our mind. We never thought there’s a science of choosing area when travelling with little ones!

For example, though Aydeen can’t sleep at the hanging cot provided in the front seats, the floor area is wide enough for him to play around. However, we don’t like them as we can’t pull the hand rest up. So we prefer seats behind them.

And latest tips we heard , the restroom in the middle is larger, making it easier to change diapers. Believe this: changing diapers for an active kiddo like Aydeen is like facing a war. Especially when he decided to scream at the top of his lungs. And jump all the way throughout. And play with your spectacles while pulling your hijab. Forget about looking hot.

2. Priority boarding

Just like any airline, those travelling with infants always have priority boarding.

As much as we wanted to shop around, after a few flights, we decided boarding earlier is the way to go with babies. Because you get to request a glass of water to prepare his milk, just in case your baby decides to scream when everyone else settles down.

And you get the top storage area for your stuff! Some people packed too much in their bags, making the top storage area impossible to fit anymore bags from other passengers. Pity the late ones.

3. Free carry buddy, hygiene set & toys

This is my favourite! Since we were having transit to and from KL, we have a total of 4 flights. Which means, we have 4 sets of these stuff! Carry buddy is the cutest ever and very handy!

4. Stroller at Dubai Airport

Upon availability, this is very handy and is quite necessary, as the journey to transit is very far at Dubai airport. There is even a person pushing Shafa’s mother on wheelchair!

5. Big, spacious airplane

We ride Airbus A380 for most of our trip. Superb! There’s even stars at the ceiling when lights off. Ha ha!

Can’t wait to share more!

The Travelling Baby

It’s been a long time since our last post as a couple. And yes, we have a baby now!

So sorry, many things have happened in between.

1) loss of Shafa’s late dad

2) Shafa’s 1st pregnancy

3) coping up with being new working parents

4) handling a few businesses during free time

And now that Aydeen (our baby) is 1 year, we are now back to travel writing & photography!

For today’s post, we would like to share a few tips on travelling with a 1-year-old baby! Hope it helps with preparation of new parents who are travellers, like us!

1. Train the baby to travel

Yup, that’s what we do every weekend. Aydeen loves car seat. Aydeen loves going out. And he loves shopping. Of course, he loves food the most. Ha ha!

P/S: see this picture, he’s a perfect shopping companion, even in Promenade Palace, The Hague! :p

2. Vary his taste pallet

Every travellers know how different food are from our home, and how it is equally important for us to try on every local food possible, especially if we are writing about one! So from the very beginning of his solid food introduction, we are making sure Aydeen has varied tastes of food: from Malaysian food, to western food, and varied tastes of grains, rice, bread, vegetables, fruits, fishes, eggs & poultry. Also with loads of plain water! And of course, eating his own healthy snacks 😊

P/S: As you can guess from the picture, Aydeen ate most of the scones at Mark & Spencer, Oxford Street. We only tasted a bit 😦

3. Make him love strollers & various types of baby carriers

If you have the space at your rented car’s boot or extra hands for other types of transportation, it is best if you could make him love the stroller.

For one, it is always more convenient using strollers , especially if lots of walking involved! And it saves your baby’s well-being in rainy weathers due to most strollers have rain covers (I saw most Londoners do use this type of transporting baby the most. Their babies are all dry and not affected by winds during the rain, whilst our baby got a little bit cold when we didn’t put on the rain coat for him, but not too wet, since his jacket is waterproof).

Whilst using stroller is more convenient, we recommend bringing along your baby carriers together. This is because, there are times that babies don’t want to sit in a stroller. Plus, it is especially easier to put the baby to sleep. In our case, we bring both adjustable sling carrier as well as soft structure carrier. Why two? Because Shafa personally love the adjustable sling carrier, while Yusof prefers the soft structure carrier. And we take turns, if it’s permissible. πŸ™‚

P/S: isn’t the yellow dinosaur rain coat that Aydeen was wearing in Lille, France (last picture) the cutest? 😊

4. Prepare loads of food & drinks

If your baby is a big eater & drinks a lot, such as ours, you will need to have a specialised bag to fill in his favourite food, milk, and plain water. Our must have is his favourite travel snack in a container, sometimes we also pack bread, and definitely his milk. Everything need to be in place, or else he will scream at the top of his lungs. Very demanding, yet a very happy boy we have. πŸ™‚

P/S: The red container in the picture at Schiphol Airport is Aydeen’s favourite snack, at the moment πŸ™‚

5. Baby’s usual hygiene set PLUS a very good lotion

The hygiene set is your usual diaper-changing, bath and grooming set. If you are travelling to cold countries, do ensure to bring the very best lotion for your baby (of which you can share too). In our case, we brought Shaklee baby lotion, and it works perfectly well for our baby! He didn’t have any issues with his skin throughout the journey , which is unbelievable, because both of us usually have skin issues when visiting cold-weather countries. Yusof got the time to put on his skin, and it feels better than any other lotions he tried before! We are definitely going to buy stocks of the lotions for ourselves too!

Hopefully this post is useful for everyone. Will share our journey soon!

Europe Trip Day 2 Part 1 – London to Manchester

Our 2nd day of Europe Trip was quite a journey. Both of us are total suckers for public transport, so we decided to have our 2nd day trip by bus. Woohoo!

image

Since we planned a lot of transportation & accommodations during our whole Europe Trip, we decided to use technology to organise ourselves. In this case, we used TripIt app.

TripIt is so useful when you have a lot of bookings on hand. Below is the print screen of how our 2nd day trip were planned in TripIt:

image

As you can see, on 17 September at 7 a.m., I will be on board National Express NX540 to Manchester Coach Station. Then we will have another journey at 6.15 p.m. to Blackpool Central Coach Station, on board National Express NX333. I have also booked a 4 star TripAdvisor-rated B&B. All this in 1 single page.

If you click further, you will have more details. Below are the examples:

Well, that’s our sharing for today. Will write again soon!

Europe Trip Day 1 Part 3 – London

Here goes the 3rd part of our Day 1 trip. We have no idea why the picture uploading didn’t work for the rest of the pictures in the last post. Probably there was a limit? Let’s have a test today.

Ok, let’s continue to the rest of the journey that we had during the rainy day trip (yes, it rained for the rest of the day).

So here goes the rest of our London visit!

1. St James Park

The first picture was that of Shafa & her brother at St James Park. The scenery was beautiful, even in rainy days! This is Shafa’s favourite picture of Day 1, as it potrays perfectly a brother-sister bonding time.

image

We are both animal lovers, and so we specifically love this park because of that. Just look at how adorable the ducks and swans at the below picture!

image

And of course, one of the reasons why we love London so much is the fact that one attraction is located at a mere walking distance to another. As proven in below picture link.

image

2. Trafalgar Square

Some travel books would suggest you to start your journey from Trafalgar Square. While it still depends on where you are based in London, starting you journey from Trafalgar Square may be a good choice. For us, specifically, we’re more than excited to take pictures with the lion statues, being a big fan to the Night at the Museum movie. He he.

image

3. The National Gallery

We heard the National Gallery was good, but our time was too packed to explore. So we decided to just take a picture of it.

image

4) Night View of the London Eye & Thames River

London at day is spectacular, but night view is even better! Below are the pictures taken at the Embankment, with view of the London Eye & Thames River.

image

5) Tower of London & The Shard

Our first day was too packed! We did not have the time (nor the budget) to visit the Tower of London during the day. So we just had a stroll around the Tower of London at night. It was magnificent! And the view of The Shard just made it complete.

image

6) Tower Bridge

Last but not least, the Tower Bridge. During the day, the Tower Bridge looks perfect. At night, the lightings made it look even more grand. In this particular picture, the Double Decker bus made it look even more London. πŸ˜‰

image

And so that completes our 1st day journey, Phew! Still long way to catch up.

Till then!

Europe Trip Day 1 Part 2 – London

Hi Everyone!

In our last post, we had shared some of the pictures taken when we had our Emirates Stadium Tour. Before we start to continue sharing pictures of the rest of our Day 1 London tour, let us share a bit on how we booked our stadiums tickets.

Well, as all of you would have known by now, Yusof is a big football fan. Yusof’s favourite is actually Manchester United, but the rest of his family supports Arsenal. So we decided to visit both stadiums.

We initially planned to book the tickets separately at the respective teams’ websites, but then we found this great website called Visit Britain Shop (www.visitbritainshop.com – the site where we also mentioned in our previous post that you can buy your Oyster card).

No price reductions, however (we had searched the internet extensively for a discounted entrance fees to both stadium). Prices were standard, no matter where you buy it. Only thing you gain when you buy at Visit Britain Shop is the convenience of buying them at one place! Not to mention you can also search for other places entrance tickets (together with promotional prices, if available). We would highly suggest this website if you do plan to buy any entrance tickets in the UK.

Enough said on this, let us now share with you the pictures of the rest of our Day 1 trip!

big ben

Us, in front of the House of Parliament, its clock tower is also famously known as Big Ben. It was raining and traffic jam, so ignore the background πŸ˜›

London Eye

Shafa in front of the London Eye. Also still raining, but Shafa didn’t mind being drenched.

Buckingham Palace

Yusof, Shafa & Bang Shah (Shafa’s brother), getting all happy wefie-ing in front of the Buckhingham Palace. With the hope of bumping into any of the royalties, but no luck.

Well, we do plan to upload more pictures in this post, but something went wrong. They couldn’t be uploaded! We will continue again in the next post. Till then!

Europe Trip Day 1 Part 1 – Emirates Stadium (Arsenal)

It’s been a month since we arrived London, and we just want to start writing about our 1st day there. Sigh, we were too busy with work when we got back, but we vow to not let that be in our way!

Our 1st visit on September 15, 2015 was to the Arsenal stadium. It was drizzling that day, but we were too excited to be down about it!

image

That’s Yusof with Shafa’s brother proudly standing in front of the stadium (with umbrellas :p)

image

Yusof landing his hand to save Thierry Henry from being drenched.

image

Yusof getting his photography inspiration. Football is his passion! πŸ™‚

image

“One day, I’ll be one of them” probably the voice in Yusof’s mind? :p

image

Shafa enjoying her visit. She had no idea who were those guys, she only chose based on looks :p

image

Yusof’s favourite player in Arsenal. πŸ™‚

image

Shafa’s getting all energetic!

image

Somebody’s having press conference :p

image

“Let’s go and play at the field! Who cares about the rain”.

image

The MOST epic picture. Arsenal’s future manager. He he.

All in all, it was a great Arsenal stadium self tour with audio guide. Worth the Β£20 paid. πŸ™‚

London Journey Plan

And so our Europe travel began in London. We took the tube (Piccadilly line) to Shafa’s brother’s house in Wood Green. The area was reachable by Piccadilly line, so no train change needed!

Of course, we use Oyster card in our London travels to enjoy cheaper rate & price caps (refer TFL website for details). The card can be bought from the airport train station. Just ask anyone, they’ll guide you.

Alternatively, you can buy it online (we prefer to shop for UK tickets at http://www.visitbritainshop.com – it’s a one stop centre). You can key in your departure date, they’ll make sure to deliver the card to you on time. Only downside, you’ll have delivery charges (in British Pound). You can gauge & decide whether you want to be worry free and have the card before your journey or just buy it at Heathrow airport. We’re sure Malaysians will do the latter, considering our currency against GBP. πŸ™‚

image

In any case that your destination is using another line, be sure to check out the London tube map. You can view the map at TFL website, also they will have a journey planner at their website.

Alternatively, you can download an app called London Journey Planner. But personally, our favourite app is called FetchMyWay (for Android) & Rome2Rio (for iOS). It will literally gets you from anywhere to anywhere (it doesn’t necessarily have to be station names), with details on costs & timing. Also there are options of different transportation alternatives (including walking!). Below are some screenshots of the app:

That’s all for our tips on London journey plan. See you in next entry!
